The Spiral Dance

The Spiral Dance

This mandala done only in ink and layered to create movement reminds me of a circle dance a spinning but also the dance of life constantly moving inward and outward like a great dance. It also reminds me of string art where strands are layered to create a design from one point to the other. Is the movement coming from the center out or is it moving outwardly into the center? Maybe it is doing both and at the same time.I call it the Spiral Dance. It is an ancient dance to nature, the moon, the sun, life fertility.

The spiral is one of the oldest symbols known to mankind. Children turn in circles playing, making miniature spirals with their arms outstretched.   The is a circle sacred space. If we move constantly in a circle, we end up in the same place we start! Look at the world around us and at the cycle of the seasons and the skies. The universe moves in a spiral, coming back around on itself but never to quite the same place, circumstance, or conditions. Seasons come and go, the Moon waxes and wanes, the Sun moves farther and closer to the earth, and we all grow and change in a spiral.
The great dance of life is the spiral dance. As a ritual working, the spiral dance will raise energy and bring laughter and joy into a gathering.

While "spiral" and a "helix" are distinct as technical terms, a helix is sometimes described as a spiral in non technical usage. The two primary definitions of a spiral are as follows:[citation needed]
a. A curve on a plane that winds around a fixed center point at a continuously increasing or decreasing distance from the point.
b. A three-dimensional curve that turns around an axis at a varying distance while moving parallel to the axis.
The first definition is for a planar curve that extends primarily in length and width, but not in height. A groove on a record or the arms of a spiral galaxy are examples of a spiral.
The second definition is for the 3-Dimensional variant of a spiral, for example a conical spring (device) can be described as a spiral whereas a cylindrical spring or strand of a DNA are examples of a helix.
The length and width of a Helix typically remain static and do not grow like on a planar spiral. If they do, then the helix becomes a Conic Helix. You can make a conic helix with an Archimedean or equiangular spiral by giving height to the center point, thereby creating a cone-shape from the spiral.

Are Spirals a Sign of a Sacred Design?

The Golden Spiral plays a harmonizing role in the Universe. It represents two well known shapes in sacred geometry: the golden mean or golden ratio (phi) spiral and the Fibonacci spiral. The unique thing about Phi is that it seems to be a geometrical blueprint for life itself and can be found incorporated in all known organic structures; from the bone structure of human beings to the seed pattern of a sunflower .

"My new Hypothesis: If we're built from Spirals while living in a giant Spiral, then is it possible that everything we put our hands to is infused with the Spiral?" - Max Cohen in the motion picture Pi
ysics of the cosmos".

Spirals as Ancient Symbols of The Goddess
The spiral phenomenon within natural forms can be explained through mathematics. But mathematics alone can't justify the lure of the spiral to the human mind.

The Spiral, linked to the "Circle", is an ancient symbol of the goddess, the womb, fertility, feminine serpent forces, continual change, and the evolution of the universe. The spiral is probably the oldest symbol of the human spirituality; found at pre-historic sites across Europe.

Some Celtic art scholars, believe the direction of the spiral may be significant. Some say clockwise spirals, are associated with the sun and harmony with the Earth, while counter-clockwise spirals are associated with manipulation of nature in the form of Pagan spells.

Celtic spirals, are the symbols most often seen in ancient burial mounds and sacred places. Many believe spirals have mystical powers to prevent evil from entering into the sacred tomb of one who has passed onto the Otherworld.

In Ireland, there are double spirals, which are sometimes seen as representing the breasts of the Mother Goddess.

In other places, there are often found, a triad of spirals; known as the "triskele". Closely related to the triquetra, this Celtic symbol is composed of three interlocked spirals, that correspond to the three phases of womanhood. Known as the Triple Goddess to the Celts, it symbolizes maidenhood, motherhood, and the crone; it also represents the waxing, full and waning moons. The Spiral Dance by Starhawk

The Spiral, later came to represent the Holy Trinity in Christianity - God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Whatever its meaning, it is interesting that it is based around the number 3 - which is regarded as a sacred number in many ancient cultures.

Heart full of Love

A I reflected on this mandala it reminded me of looking at a drop of pond water
and seeing a whole invisible world brimming with life completely unaware of my existence. Am I the observer or the observed? The symbols also represent parts of me invisible yet living that I may not be aware of and there to discover. The passage that I love by William Blake came to my mind when I was reflecting on the mandala. (Fragments from "Auguries of Innocence" by William Blake

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

In this Season of Lights

                          In This Season of Lights

I was reflecting on the heart chakra and the Christmas lights, the way it seems at this time people are more loving and thoughtful. Everyone's heart chakra is open to the Ray of Christ Consciousness. In the energy and noise of the Holiday season there is the silent sound that you can hear if you stop long enough to listen. The sound comes from our own heartbeat. the lights we see are our own inner light shining out to one another and we light up our homes with Christmas lights as symbols of the Greater Light. I think lights should be something we keep up all year round to remind us of the light within.
God is pure spiritual light. As with normal light, spiritual light can manifest as a spectrum of seven colors, each color a representation of an attribute of God. God's light permeates the universe and each thing in it. When men and women have the light of God within, it is possible for them to come to a realization of God and gain the spiritual consciousness required for ascension.

I am a Flower-Child at Heart Believing in Love and Peace

I am a Flower-Child at Heart Believing in Love and Peace

I did the mandala during my Women of Wisdom group. We had a special ceremony in honor of our vision and intention for 2011. We meditated and shared our intentions , Then we used creativity as a part of the process and we all created intention mandalas. I started mine with my name in the center and added  creativity, peace, love and intuition all representing my  intention . I only used pen and ink to draw the mandala and later on I thought that it needed color and switched to bright colored markers to finish it. In reflecting on the mandala, it reminds me of the 60's and the time of the flower children, a time when people were handing out flowers as symbols of love and peace. I think at this very scary time, we  all need to go back to that. It also represents my own soul which is still very much a flower child and believes in all goodness. If we all spent one minute a day to stop and give our thoughts to peace and love, our world would become a better place to live and our earth would heal. Perhaps that is looking at things with rose colored glasses but that is how I would rather "see".

The Spiritual Warrior

The Spiritual Warrior is a person who challenges the dreams of fear, lies, false beliefs, and judgments that create suffering and unhappiness in his or her life. It is a war that takes place in the heart and mind of a man or woman. The quest of the Spiritual Warrior is the same as spiritual seekers around the world. The Spiritual Warrior faces this challenge with the clarity and awareness that this war is fought within himself and that Truth and unconditional love are on the other side of these battles. This is what the Toltecs refer to as Personal Freedom. You can find this referenced in the book The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz.

Characteristics and Traits

The mandala was done with watercolor on wet paper. I wanted to try one of the exercises from the book  The Mandala Workbook by Susanne Fincher. I felt that by using watercolor I would be able to stay connected to the spontaneity of design. I began by painting in a a dot not quite in the center and allowing the rest of the design to grow organically. I painted in sections and created flower shapes which were naturally created not planned. I added the symbols to the shapes after wards . The symbols appear to be some kind of subconscious meaning strength and power. It reminded me of a warrior but not a warrior fighting with weapons. It was then that I thought of a spiritual warrior wearing a shield that represents spiritual power and strength.

To win the war against fear requires awareness, courage, discipline, and commitment to transform the emotional body. These are some of the characteristics of a Warrior

Awareness of the Spiritual Warrior

The first and most vital tool of the spiritual warrior is awareness. It is easy to we think we are aware, but pure awareness has no thinking involved. It has no thinking because it has no interpretation. Awareness is to perceive with clarity the truth of what is happening without interpretation or opinion. In a moment of awareness the dialogue in the mind stops. We are “seeing” from a point or view separate from the reasoning part of our mind. This could be described as an epiphany. Practiced seer’s live in this awareness in every moment.
Awareness is essential because it is the state of consciousness that allows us to discern between the facts and the Truth, and between the story and the lies in our mind. The realm of our mind is filled with false perceptions and false beliefs. While the mind can be very clever with stories and lies, it is the consciousness of awareness that is the discerning intelligence. We may use very intelligent reasoning to make a decision that is not good for ourselves. Only to look at it in hindsight and realize that we discounted indicators that told us otherwise. This can be done in something as simple as a stock investment. The mind is clever, but it is also full of assumptions and limited paradigms of perception. Conscious awareness allows us to see clearly instead of be blinded by these false belief paradigms.
Self awareness is the clarity to know who and what you are, and not get caught up in self important images of ourselves. These self important images in our mind distort our sense of who we are. False images can lead us to low self esteem and self confidence, or they can take us into being self centered. If you have an idea of who you are, then consider that you are not that idea in your mind. You are the one creating the idea, and observing it. Self awareness that you are not any of those images in your mind is essential to becoming free of self importance.

Courage of the Spiritual Warrior

The courage that makes for a good soldier also makes for a good Spiritual Warrior, but the intent becomes completely different. A soldier has courage to face a challenge that may bring physical harm. The Spiritual warrior has the courage to question challenge his or her own beliefs. By challenging our own beliefs we can dissolve the lies that cause our suffering. To challenge our own beliefs requires courage because it means the end of our illusion of safety. When other people challenge our own beliefs we are usually quick to defend. We defend them even if they cause us to suffer. As a warrior we learn not to defend what we believe, and then to challenge those very beliefs ourselves. In this way we are able to sort out the truth from illusions.

Discipline of the Spiritual Warrior

A soldier has discipline to follow orders and continues on when faced with challenges. The Spiritual Warrior’s discipline to continue on with their path when faced with challenges from their mind. It is easier to follow orders as a soldier, because we are threatened with consequences and rewarded to motivate us. This is in line with our years of conditioning. A warrior must have the discipline to practice deal with their own mind without someone else providing the motivation with carrots or sticks. A warrior must exercise their own will at the command of their heart, not an outside authority figure. This often means going against the fearful opinions in our mind that tempt us with illusions of punishment and rewards. We must also have the discipline to follow our own heart even when tempted by another person’s opinion. This way of living requires disciplined practice.

The Love of the Spiritual Warrior

A soldier has a commitment to love his/her country. The Spiritual warrior must have the commitment to love him/her self. The warrior then extends that love to humanity. The commitment is required because in our journey we will certainly fumble and fall many times. It is in having a strong commitment that we get back up again. It is common to fall to judgment. It can be easy to love some people, particularly the people that like us or treat us well. However, it requires a tremendous commitment to love in the face of those that reject us. This commitment will cause us to challenge our beliefs about our judgments and not being compassionate. We must be committed to love beyond our own self-serving interests of what it will bring us. This is how we will become happy beyond our current paradigm of beliefs. In time we become committed to love for the sheer enjoyment of expressing love. This becomes our commitment. We nourish ourselves with the love we express. A warrior acts in this committed way, even when challenged.

Spiritual Warrior

This mandala was done with watercolor on wet paper. . I drew the circle  painted areas of color I really did not see the design of the flower or plan the shapes. They seemed to appear out of the negative space around the shapes that I created. I was trying to bypass  the conscious part of my brain and tue into only the intuitive and allowing the colors to flow into each other. The symbols  represent strength and power. In reflecting on this mandala it reminded me of a warrior shield. I thought of the idea of a spiritual warrior. One that has power because of her own inner strength.

Face of Sophia Who Brings Wisdom to the Earth

I used simple line drawing with pen and ink and covering the inside of the circle with the symbols of flowers and the profile of a face. some of symbols were in my first mandalas. The profile is also in the  one that I call Solar Disc. they both  represent Goddess. As I reflected on the face it reminded me of Sophia Goddess of Wisdom
She is the central pivot of creation and represents the feminine aspect in all things.
She is Wisdom Incarnate, the Goddess of all those who are wise.

Wisdom is a deep understanding and realizing of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to choose or act to consistently produce the optimum results with a minimum of time and energy. It is the ability to optimally (effectively and efficiently) apply perceptions and knowledge and so produce the desired results. Wisdom is also the comprehension of what is true or right coupled with optimum judgment as to action. Synonyms include: sagacity, discernment, or insight. Wisdom often requires control of one's emotional reactions (the "passions") so that one's principles, reason and knowledge prevail to determine one's actions.
I find this mandala significant because not only is it the theme of my Women Of Wisdom group but it is also one of my soul intentions. I believe that inner wisdom is the same as intuition all a process of inner work and study. This is another mandala symbol significant to my own life journey and next step in my spiritual path.

I am A Seeker of Hidden Things

I did this mandala by beginning one of the faces of the Goddesses that I paint on the center and as the focal point. I begin connecting the design in segmented shapes and attached her flowing hair to the ring of the circle. I used both colored pencil and markers to finish the mandala. I reflecting on the face,  It  reminds me of the Renaissance , magic, alchemy, a symbol in the Tarot. With the symbols around the circle, it seems to represent the Esoteric, occult or hidden wisdom. It also represents me as s seeker for I have been a spiritual seeker since I was 19 and worked as an intuitive counselor and channeled for many years. I have a love for the mystical and metaphysical study. It is is also significant in that I am a Sagittarius the seeker of hidden things.

Flame of Transformation Ignited

I meditated before doing this mandala because it was my birthday and I wanted to use it as a a part of the  ritual. I also used the Mother Peace and Angel cards to do a birthday reading. Both cards related to the mandala. In meditation I saw a pin point of yellow like the tiny flame of candle.  I had prepared by putting my pastel pencils beside me so that I had easy access to what I was going to use as a medium for my mandala work. I started by drawing the circle and focused on the center of the circle and  placed a yellow dot  with the pastel pencil  representing the light that I saw when first meditating. After I created the mandala I did the readings, Both readings represented transformation. I thought of how the inner work that I was undergoing would begin my own transformation and that it was also significant to my Wise Woman Ceremony  and the meaning of the ritual. The theme was transformation. I even received the angel card  the Phoenix the mystical fire bird born of sacred flame. The time for you to be reborn in body mind and spirit,  slough off your old life and face import ant new challenges. A wealth of possibilities awaits you. Let the Phoenix and the angel Raphael guide you. Do not be daunted for you will rise stronger and more beautiful from the ashes of your old self and be empowered to new heights. The message is that reality is transmuted and transformed but not destroyed for life is eternal... .
It is as though the mandala was a symbol for my own birthday reading.

I really believe this was significant, for me in the time that I find myself in my life (turning 63 which is a nine coming to a completion. and the mandala course because I am once again returning to my spiritual and inner work. The things that seemed to matter so much before have lost their importance. I am beginning my journey homeward.

I also did a Mother Peace reading  ( I have started using them again because the cards  are in a form of a circle) and received the same message.

It showed that  I was on a path to enlightenment but would confront my own resistance  and conflict to the process. It also said that I was over thinking (this came up about the same time that I was questioning if I wanted to start the intensity of inner work again, from my past experience I knew what inner work  would be like when I started and recalled the dream study and the intensity of that. The cards said that I was blocking my own process. At the time that I was doing the reading, I was also feeling overwhelmed and even doubting if I had the abilities to put as much as was needed into the course.
This again was the symbol for both the Phoenix and the mandala. I found the creating the mandala was a reflection and an image reflecting form what i was going through and all methods and intuitive tools related and told a story that I could use in my own life. Thus the power of creating a mandala. and the name....

The Rose of Sharon is a Lady

The Rose of Sharon is a Lady

I started the mandala by choosing stencils for the beginning shapes and design. I was feeling uncomfortable with the idea of stencils. I thought it would block my intuition. However, as I worked with the stencils as tools for the intuition, I found that I could use them in the beginning process of creating the mandala. I also decided that I wanted the mandala to have more of a painterly effect and so I used acrylics to paint in the shapes as well as the negative space around the shapes. I chose the colors that I used intuitively. In reflection on the mandala, I was reminded of the Cathedral of Notre  Dame's Window , the Virgin Mary in Mexico and the flower Rose of Sharon. I named the mandala Rose of Sharon not really consciously knowing why all these things were related. It was after researching all three  that I saw why I named it The Rose of Sharon is a Lady. The circular window that I remember in Paris is a mandala. Our Lady of Guadalupe Virgin Mary and the symbol of the Rose of Sharon representing Mary. They are connected to the name of the mandala. It was a powerful experience as the message was that I should trust my own intuition and the creation process even when it does not make sense intellectually. It also showed to not not be closed to any one material or technique in creating the mandalas.
